Online Workshop - How To Be A Critic

Register - Free

An online workshop exploring the role of the critic, pathways into the industry and guidance on how to craft/edit empathetic responses to works of art.

(Limited spots available) Join us on Thursday, June 29 at 6pm (UK time) for an online workshop on becoming a critic, exploring the challenges of being a critic in the age of social media, where everyone has a voice.

Hosted by Ammar Kalia, the Guardian's Global Music Critic since 2019, the online workshop will give attendees the opportunity to hone their critical skills, encourage them to work on their writing, think of their niche and interests, as well as develop a more holistic view of career paths and ways in which they can navigate their identities.

The workshop will examine how the media can demand People of Colour express their personal experiences through their writing, as well as explore how to produce embodied, empathetic responses to art while maintaining a boundary in the public sphere.

Online Workshops are held monthly as part of Commun People, a programme that advocates for emerging BIPOC voices to participate in the Arts while strengthening their skills and widening their employment opportunities. By encouraging critical discourse, peer mentoring, practical and creative development, the programme will support BIPOC voices to develop their practice and overcome often exclusionary barriers to initiating or sustaining a career in the Arts.

Ammar Kalia is a writer, poet and musician. He is a features writer and the Global Music Critic for the Guardian. He published his debut collection of poetry, Kintsugi: Jazz Poems for Musicians Alive and Dead, and an accompanying album of original music in 2020. He has an essay in the anthology Haramacy, which was released in 2022 and his debut novel, A Person Is A Prayer, is out in 2024 with Oldcastle Books.
